Styles change over time. For example, an avocado colored refrigerator bought 40 years ago may no longer be considered stylish. That example may be a stretch, but you get the idea.
Families also change. This can be with the birth of a child, when children become young adults and head off to college, or when you’re caring for an aging parent.
These are just two areas that can dictate the need for home updates to address style changes or to address the need for more or less space or perhaps even repurposed space.
Areas to Consider
Kitchens are often the first to be thought of for a renovation. That is because we spend so much time in our kitchens preparing food and hosting guests. We want that area to look great and also be fully functional. As a result of all that use, the kitchen is where signs of wear and tear show up most often.
Another thing to consider is the age of your appliances. While you may be taking good care of them, they can certainly deteriorate over time. Plus, there are so many new features being added to appliances that make life easier. In fact, technology may be the first thing that gets you yearning for an update.
Functionality is the next big thing to consider. Do you need to modify the workspace within your kitchen? That could be adding a highly efficient island with a sink, beverage cooler, and more. Or it could be adding professional grade appliances, including two cooktops, to handle your growing guest list.
Bathrooms are an area of the home which see high use, but they also have potential for damage from water or steam. Plus, there are so many options to consider from the walk-in curbless glass shower to two-person shower rooms and even a tub in the shower. We call them grown up shower designs.
The master bedroom is becoming a personal oasis with an adjoining study or reading room, large master bath, and that perfect closet with tons of space for both him and her. A major upgrade could involve not only updating the existing space but expanding it by building outward, upward, and taking over adjacent unused space.
For bedrooms that belonged to kids who have since moved out, you might want to consider transitioning those rooms into something else. A couple of options could include a new guest room or study.
Those are three areas that could trigger your decision regarding a home update. Of course, we could go on to dining rooms, converting unused space into multipurpose rooms, adding a sunroom, or even a man cave. And don’t forget implementing universal design for aging in place. There are lots of reasons behind a home remodeling project.
When to Update
The quick list above of things that could launch your home update should be the key drivers. After all, if you’re really interested in updating your kitchen, that will help significantly with your motivation through the full remodeling project.
As to typical timelines, in our remodeling projects we’ve typically seen updates every 10 to 15 years. It can certainly be more frequent if you want to stay on top of the latest home design trends and up-to-date appliances. Renovations can also be done on a much less frequent basis, such as only right before homeowners decide to sell their home. In that scenario, we recommend you complete the renovations early enough to actually enjoy the updates yourself.
