Kitchens are at the heart of our lives. We spend so much time in our kitchens that we naturally want them to make us feel at home, be inviting to our guests, as well as highly functional — from making coffee to cooking up that seven course meal for a special occasion. So when it comes to remodeling your kitchen, it has a tremendous impact on your home and even your lifestyle.
Today I'm going to address the impact of white kitchen cabinets. Later we'll go into backsplashes, open spaces, and wine coolers. We'd like to hear your ideas as well.
According to Professional Remodeler kitchen cabinets are one of the top 10 remodeling trends from 2013 and extending into 2014. The Houston Chronicle early this month published an article titled "Top Reasons to Remodel Right Now." Their lead photo was of a gorgeous kitchen with — white cabinets.
My Home Ideas shows off their remodeling trends with what they call 21st Century Cabinetry — frosted glass doors above the countertop and white cabinets holding up the whole thing. If you need further convincing on this trend check out CultureMap Dallas and their article The Most Beautiful (and practical) design trends in custom Dallas kitchens. Nearly all of their photos highlight white cabinets.
OK. You've caught the gist that kitchen cabinets are moving to all white or at a minimum into neutral colors. But before we move on, one more note, this time from CBS News. In their post Top 10 Kitchen Remodeling Trends they note that while splashes of color show up in magazines, neutral tones are more popular in American homes — their survey shows 3 out of 4 prefer soft and neutral tones.
Make it Happen
There are three ways to update your cabinets. You can replace them. You can refinish them. You can reface them.
Replacing your existing cabinets has a great deal to offer. You can reconfigure how you have the cabinets arranged, take into account some new types of cabinets and storage options, and they are brand new! Of course, there is a fair bit of cost and quite a bit of work.
You can also refinish your existing cabinets. This involves stripping the existing finish, sanding down the surface in preparation for paint or stain, and then applying the finish. It can be very cost effective, if you're applying your own elbow grease. HGTV.com offers some advice in Refinishing Kitchen Cabinet Ideas.
Another popular option is to reface your existing cabinets. This involves removing and replacing the doors and drawers. This Old House has an interesting how-to article on refacing that can give you more insight. This is a cost effective way to provide a whole new look for your cabinets.
